Experience Japan Continues

To celebrate Japan’s National Children’s Day (May 5th) in Japan, The Japanese Gardens & National Irish Stud in Co Kildare, in association with the Ireland Japan Association, are organising a weekend of Japanese workshops and demonstrations on May 5th & 6th.

Schedule of Events Include:

Saturday May 5th 

[1]  The Art of Sushi Making 

(Demonstration & Practical Workshops)

Learn how to make sushi by a professional sushi master. Yoshio comes from Osaka and runs his own successful Japanese catering company in Dublin (Sushi Foods). He is an expert at preparing sushi among other typical Japanese delights. This workshop will consist of Yoshio demonstrating how to make sushi giving you useful tips on how to cook the rice, ingredients to use, where to buy, and most importantly, how to role the perfect sushi role! After his demonstration you will be able to practice yourself and enjoy eating the sushi you make. This is always a very popular event so pre-booking is essential.

Saturday May 5th 

2]  Shodo 

(Japanese Calligraphy)

Yoko Wakabayashi, Dublin’s resident Calligraphy artist, will be available to write your name or your childs name in Japanese Calligraphy between 11.00 – 16.00. See how your name is written in Japanese.

Sunday May 6th 

[3] IKEBANA Demonstration 

(Flower Arranging Demonstration Only)

The art of flower arranging is known as Ikebana. Tomoko Ozeki, our resident Ikebana instructor, will talk the group through the principles of Ikebana before demonstrating 2 or 3 different arrangements where the group will have time to ask questions and do their own demonstrations in front of the class if wanted. One lucky winner will get to take home a master piece by Tomoko-san!!

Sunday May 6th 

[4] Tastes from Japan 

(Cookery Demonstration)

Junko Hamilton, one of Dublin’s respected Japanese chefs and fellow member of the IJA council, will perform this 2 hour long demonstration teaching you how to cook basic Japanese home cooked dishes. Many people associate Japanese food with sushi and raw fish. Junko will show you that this is certainly not the case. She will show you how to prepare rice, miso soup, and a selection of three other dishes – very typical to most Japanese households.

Date: Sunday May 6th

Time: 13:00 (2 hours approx)

[5] TAKO-YAKI

Japanese Food & Sweet Stall (All weekend)

For those not attending the workshops, don’t worry!! You will still get to sample some authentic Japanese festival foods as Masaki & his team pops up his mobile Tako-yaki food stall. On sale will be a selection of Japanese foods and sweets.

[6] SHAMISEN 

Japanese traditional music

Also performing in public places around the gardens will be a talented young Shamisen player, dressed in traditional costume, Hibiki Kubo.
